FOR FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NO. NPF DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. M98242)

Dear Mr. Wood:

The Technical Specifications for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station state that the inservice inspection of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Class 1, 2, and 3 components shall be performed in accordance with Section XI of the ASME Boller and Pressure Vessel Code and applicable addenda ,

as required by 10 CFR 50.55a(g), except where specific written relief has been granted by the Commission.

By letter dated March 7,1997, as supplemented November 18,1997, you i submitted to the NRC requests for relief from the examination requirements of '

the applicable ASME Code,Section XI, for the second inservice inspection ,

interval examinations. The NRC staff has reviewed and evaluated your Relief Request Nos. RR-A13. RR-A14, RR-AIS, and RR-B8 for the second 10-year inservice inspection interval at Davis-Besse. As detailed in the enclosed -

Safety Evaluation, the staff has approved your requests for relief. The  ;

proposed alternatives in Relief Requests RR-A13, RR-A14, and RR-B8 have been  ;

granted pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(1). The proposed alternative in .
