Independent Spent F el Storage Installation introduction This.eport provides data on radiation levels inside the Northern States Powrr Company's (NSP) Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) at the Prairie Island NLclear Generating Plant for December 1997. The report contains data gathered according to agreements between NSP and the Minnesota Dcpartment of IIcalth (MDII).

Currently, seven casks are storing spect fuelinside the ISFSI.

Pressurized Ionization Chamber (PIC) Monitorine Dming this reporting period, daily radiation data were collected by the PIC system, s,hich was installed in January 1995. The system consists of two ion chambers, computer meraories and modems that are contacted about every 20 minutes by llealth Department computers in St. Paul. The computers automatically call llealth Department staff if unusual radiation levels are detected. One chamber is located about 100 feet north of the casks and the other is about 100 feet south.

Data were collected from December 1 throud December 31,1997, and are summarized in Table 1 far Plc No.1 and in Table 7 fu s 4 ' No. 2. Daily averages are presented, though data for every five minutes are maee.

Analysis and Comments Normal levels of ambient radiation were observed inside the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant ISFSI during December 1997.

PIC No. I readings varied from 75.5 to 78.7 micro R per hour. PIC No. 2 readings rnnged from 72.6 tt 75.5 micro R per hour.

All readings appear to be within the normal ranges of ambient radiation levels inside the ISFSI near the casks (about 100 feet away): 70 to 90 micro R per hour.

Before any casks were in place, the natural background radiation levels inside the ISFSI ranged from 7 to 13 micro R per hour.

Additional monitoring data on radioactivity levels in other media (alr, for example) are available in the' annual MDil " Environmental Radiation Data Report," issued in June 1997.
