UNIT 2 MAKE-UP AND PURIFICATION SYSTEM FILTER REMOVAL (AUXILIARY BUILDING)

A team of eight technicians successfully completed the removal uf four highly contaminated filters from the Unit 2 Make-up and Purification System (MU), today.

(Filters which had been in place since the March 1979 accident.)

Un Monoay, March 22, 1982, the attempted removal of the Seal Injection Filter (MU-F-4A), one of the system filters, resulted in a leak of approximately 150 gallons of contaminated water. The team reacted according to contingency procedures and the cater was immediately vacuumed into drums using special'.. . signed equipment. No leakage outside the confines of the MU cubicle occurred. After full assessment of the filter housing leakage, the cause of the leakage was identified by the licensee and corrected.

Rigorous training and rehersals were completed by the team members prior to commencement of filter removal operations.

On Tuesday, March 23, 1982, the two seal injection filtors (MU-F-4A and MU-F-4B) were successfully removed.

24, 1982, the team successfully removed the two remaining filters G(!nWednesday,MU-F-2A and MU-F-58)March in the Make-up System.

On Thursday, March 25,1982, the team completed their assigned task when they cleaned and rinsed the fil;er housings of residual radioactive debris, the removed filters were placed in shielded drums in preparation for shipment to EG&G, Idaho. Plans are to ship the shielded drums containing the filters during the second week in April 1982.

The total man-rem for this week's evolautions was icss than 1 man-rem. ,
