Dear NRC Officials:

On October 7,1997, 'he U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the referenced generic letter regarding a safety-significar:t issue which may have generic implications for degrading performance of the Emergency Core Cooling System pumps. The generic letter required within 30 days, a written response indicating (a) whether or not the requested information will be submitted, and (b) whether or not the requested information will be submitted within the requested i time period. By this letter, PECO Energy Company (PECO Energy) is providing g the required 30-day response.

November 4,1997 GL 97-04 Docket Nos. 50-277,50 278 50 352, 50-353 PECO Energy is participating in a newly-established BWR Owners' Group  !

(BWROG) effort which has the objective of reviewing current BWR industry '

NPSH calculational methodology which will resuh in recommending a consistent approach for utility 90-day responses to the generic letter. The information to be  !

contained in the 90-day response will provide assurance to the Staff that the i NPSH issues are being adequately addressed. The .BWROG had already  ;

established dialog with the Staff prior to the issuance of the generic letter and t p!ans to continue that interaction so that NPSH issues are properly addressed.  :

PECO Energy intends to provide the requested information in a 90-day response to the generic letter based on the recommendations resulting from the BWROG NPSH Committee.
