regarding ampacity derating parameters for installed Thermo Lag fire barriers at PBAPS and LGS. A* preliminary review of the March 24,1997 letter was performed by the NRC staff and its contrador, Ssndia National Laboratories and the subjed RAI was then issued.

in the development of the response to the RAI, we have identified that additional adions are needed to thoroughly addross all of the questions and recommendations included in the RAl. As a result, an additional two (2) months is needed to provide a full response to the RAl. The additional actions include revisions to existing calculat!ons to address recommended ch4nges in the calculation methodologies and validation studies using available industry test data. These additional actions are not expected to have any impad on our previous conclusion that the ampacity derating factors associated with installed Thermo Lag barriers are within acceptable I'mits. Use of the additional time will avoid potentialimpad on modifications and other engineering work associated with resolution of the Thermo Lag issue that could occur if resources were required to be redireded to work on the RAI response. Providing a complete response within this time frcme is not expected to have a significant impact on the NRC's review of the empecity derating issue. This request was discussed with Messrs. J. F. Williams and B. C.

Buckley of the NRC on January 12 and 13,1996, respectively, who indicated there were no objections from the NRC staff. Therefore, the requested response to the RAI will be provided by i

March 16,1998.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I Very truly yours, G. A. Hunger, Jr.,
