Seabrook Station

Seal Entrapments-October 18 and 20.1997 North Atlantic Energy Service Corporation (Nonh Atlantic) hereby reports the entrapment of two seals at Seabrook Station. One seal was observed in Seabrook Station's Circulating Water System Pumphouse forebay on October 18,1997 and a second seal was obsen ed in screen wash debris on October 20, 1997. North Atlantic notified the National Marine Fisheries Service of these i entrapment incidents by telephone'. The New England Aquarium has picked up the seals in order to perfonn a necropsy in the near future.

This report is made in response to the National Marine Fisheries Service letter dated January 5, 2

1995, recommending that North Atlantic repon seal entrapment incidents. The attached seal entrapment incident repon is enclosed as requested.

North Atlantic submitted an application for a Small Take Exemption Pennit on June 13,19973 for the incidental taking of seals pursuant to Section 101(a)(5)(A) of the Marine Mammal Protection

Act and in accordance with 50 CFR 216.104.

Date of Recovery: Iloth seals recovered on October 20,1997.

Species identifnation: Appears to be two harbor seals Description / Condition of Seal: Appears to be two young-of the-year harbor seal.

Reporters: Ronald A. Sher, Senior Scientist Recent Seal Obsen ations: Two seals were discovered on October 8 and 9,1997. An incident report was submitted to the NMFS'. Necropsy results are expected from the New England Aquarium in the near future.

Recent Fish Entrapment: About 80 fish were entrapped during the week previous to the seal entrapments, including about 30 herring, pollock and cod.

Cooling Water Intake Temperature at Approximate Time of Entrapment: 54'F Plant Power Level at Time of
