50 306 DPR-60 Response to inspection Report 98007 Transmittal of Cooling Water Strainer Backwash Valve Safety Evaluation Your letter of June 5,1998, which transmitted Inspection Report No. 98007, requested that our response to the Notice of Violations contained in that report include the results of our revised evaluation of whether the temporary modification installed for the Cooling Water Strainer Backwash Valves constituted an unreviewed safety question. In our response to inspection Report 98007, dated.luly 6,1998, we noted that the safety evaluation for temporary modification 95T047 to the Cooling Water Strainer Backwash Valves was revised on June 22,1998, but that the revision had since been retracted. The June 22,1998 response stated that the results of a new revision to the safety evaluation would be transmitted separately at a later time.

Revision 1 to Safety Evaluation 95T047, "Back-up Compressed Air Supply for Cooling Water Strainer Backwash Valve Actuator" was approved on September 1, I
1998. The revised safety evaluation concluded that there was no unreviewed safety question. A copy of the revised safety evaluation was provided to the NRC Resident inspectors for Prairie Island shortly after its approval. However, the revised safety evaluation was neve" formally transmitted to the NRC as requested by inspection Report 98007. To rectify that oversight, a copy of the revised safety evaluation is attached for the information of the NRC Staff.
