- Question #1.

The calculation 'of rediological exposures based on_ the energy effects of specific isotopes.-

has been completed as requested. L 4 Question #2:

s The request for a commitment to complete decommissioning activities by 2007 has been -

pursued up through NASA management. Our parent organization, NASA Lewis -

i Resecrch Center (LeRC), located in Cleveland was ma'de aware of need for this~

(ccmmitment in early December when the request was received at Plum ifrook. -In order Sto provide a PBRF status briefing by LeRC Plum Brook to the required NASA.

, f Headquarters personnel, it was necessary to delay the briefing until January 7,1998.

F Additional briefings have been arranged with the NASA LeRC Director, Mr. Don a

_ Campbell on February 11 th. and with General John Daly, NASA Associate Administrator en March 3rd at NASA Headquarters. In addition, Mr. Dan Goldin, -

NASA Administrator has been made aware of the PBRF situation by NASA -

' Headquarters Staff, though no formal briefing has been made to him yet by LeRC Plum Brook.--

An independent PBRF study effort was initiated in October of 1997 prior to the current

NRC request to investigate _several issuea involving the PBRF. This study includes :

i detailing the scope of decommissioning activities, updating the radiological; characteristics of the PBRF, updating the radioactive material inventory and developing -

a current estimate of the quantity and classification of the low level rad waste to be -

produced by decomissioning. In addition, this study addresses the availability of LLW -

- storage and their ability and willingness to enter long term agreements. A comparison

. based on costs and radiological exposure of different decommissioning approaches will =

( be made resulting in a recommended option.

G ENASA)is currently reviewing this on going study effort to determine whether it can be-gol&

expanded to include, completion of a formal PBRF decommissioning plan as requested -

by the NRC for the ensof1999.

}l Based'orfour current pr6gress, a reply to the NRC within the original 60 day request, l January )18th, doss not'seem feasible. NASA proposes to provide responses to both -
