SUBJECT:
YEAR 2000 ASSESSMENT OF SCIENTIFIC AND TECilNICAL CODES Per your request, the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS) staff has completed an initial review of the list of codes identified in your September 19,1997, transmittal. A large number of the codes on that list are no longer being used by NMSS. The attached listing identifies codes from the September 19 list which were sponsored by NMSS and are currently in use. The technical contact for each code is identified as wc!!.
Please note that the list of NMSS sponsored codes contains several codes which are actually subroutines of the SCALE code and are not used as independent codes. We reconunend that codes identified in this fashion in the " Remarks" section of the attachment be deleted from the list of codes being considered for Year 2000 compliance.
We have also discussed with your staff the possibility that codes other than those listed in the attachment to your September 19,1997, memorandum may be ofinterest in compiling a

listing of scientific and technical codes used by NMSS and how these relate to the Year 2000 issue. As we identify additional codes which may be appropriate, we will update the attachment to include the additional codes and transmit the revision to you and your staff.
