SUMMARY

OF PUBLIC MEETING HELD ON SEPTEMBER 24 AND 25, 1997.

WITH THE ELECTRIC POWER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (EPRI) WORKING GROUP ON COTS TIER-2 DOCUMENT On September 24 and 25.1997. the staff held a public meeting at the MPR offices in Alexandria. Virginia with representatives of the EPRI COTS (Commercial Off-the-Shelf) Tier-2 working group. A list of attendees and their affiliations is provided as Attachment 1.

The EPRI working group is preparing an implementation guide. EPRI TR-106439.

" Guideline on Evaluation and Acceptance of Commercial Grade Digital Equiament for Nuclear Safety app ications", to provide guidance on qualification of digital l

equipment that has not been produced under an Appendix B program.

Most of the meeting was closed to the public due to the proprietary nature of the information being discussed.

EPRI and NRC staff discussed (1) the use of a graded a3proach to COTS dedication:

(2) critical characteristics and verification methocs: (3) testing methcdology and adequacy, and use of testing in lieu of V&V: (4) maintaining a dedication and life cycle issues: (5) use of expertise and engineering judgement: and (6).use of anecdotes and examples.

EPRI and the staff plan to hold additional meetings on this topic, however, no dates have yet been scheduled.
