Seabrook Station Seal lintranments-october 8 and 9.1997 n

North Atlantic Energy Service Corporation (North Atlantic) hereby reports the entrapmrt of two '

seals at Seabrook Station. One seal was obsened in Seabrook Station's Circulating Water System Pumphouse forebay on October 8,1997 and a second seal was observed in the Service Water System Pumphouse forebay on October 9,1997. Nonh Atlantic notified the National hiarine Fisheries Service of these entrapment incidents by telephone'. The New England Aquarium has '

also been notified to pick up the seals in order to perform a necropsy in the near future. ,

This report is made in response to the National Marine Fisheries Service letter dated January 5, ',

1995', recommending that North Atlantic report seal entrapment incidents. The attached seal ,

entrapment incident report is enclosed as requested.

Nonh Atlantic submitted an application for a Small Take Exemption Permit on June 13,1997' for the incidental taking of seals pursuant to Section 101(a)(5)(A) of the Marine Manunal Protection Act and in accordance with 50 CFR 216.104.  :

Date of Recovery: The seal observed on October 9,1997 was recovered the same day. The seal observed on October 8,1997 has not been recovered from the forebay. -

i Specie; identification: Appears to be two harbor seals Description /Ccadition of Seal: Appears to be two young-of-the-year harbor seal.

Reporters: John B. Hart, Environmental Compliance hianager and Ronald A. Sher, Senior Scientist Recent Seal Observations: One intact seal was recovered on July 27,1997. An incident report was submitted to the NhiFS . Necropsy results are expected from the New England Aquarium in the near future.

Recent Fish Entrapment: Several dozen small fish were entrapped during the week previous to the seal entrapments, including cunner and rock gunnel.

Cooling Water intake Temperature at Approximate Time of Entrapment: 51 F Plant Power Level at Time of Entrapment: Seabrook Station was operating at 100 percent.
