ne Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) submitted a Waste Form Mishap report via letter dated April 12, 1994 (PY CEl/NMSS 0024L). The report was made based on notification to PNPP by the disposal site operator that a PNPP shipment was generating gas in excess of the lower explosive limit. PNPP stated in the report that a means to eliminate the cause of the gas generation was being pursued.
Since 1994, PNPP has switched from cellulose based fibers to Polyacrylienitrile (PAN) based fibers in the powde cd resin used in the radioactive waste processing systems. Gas generation has not beca obsentd in processed waste since switching to the PAN fiber based powdered resin.
Since processed waste at PNPP no longer appears to generate gas in excess of the limits, it has been determined that further evaluation of installation of a biocide treatment system is not warranted. if processed waste begins generating gas in excess of the limits, the services of an offsite processor would be utilized to correct the problem rather than attempting to resolve the problem on site.
