SUBJECT:

MEETING WITH SIEMENS POWER CORPORATION ON AUGUST 20, 1997 On August 20,1997, NRC staff met with Jim Edgar from Siemens Power Corporation to discuss pending license amendments. The meeting was open to the public, and Sid Crawford attended representing himself just to listen. An agenda of the meeting is attached.

The pending amendments were discussed in priority order and the completion dates in the attachment were agreed upon. When we started discussing other issues, Mr. Edgar stated that they have a new idea. After decommissioning the lagoons (extracting the uranium from the sludge), they were planning to ship drums of the dry, low activity sludge off-site for burial. Now,

. they are considering in-situ vitrification disposal. The basic process is that the waste would be placed in a lined hole in the ground and a sand type filler would be mixed in.. Electrodes would be placed diagonally across the material to heat it. Once heated, the rMerial would melt into a glass form. Heather Astwood stated that this would require a 10 CFR 20.2002 review and gave

- him a copy of NUREG-1101, "On-site Disposal of Radioactive Waste," for information about what type of information to submit.

Siemens stated that one other submittal they expect to cend in is an updated Chapter 15 for information purposes. The meeting closed when there were no questions from members of the public.
