SER CHANGE - SEISMOLOGY & GEOLOGY AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING WPPSS NUCLEAR PROJECT - UNITS 1 & 4 SER input, dated February 24, 1975, page 9, now reads:

2.5.4 Stability of Subsurface Materials The upper 60 feet subjected to the postulated earthquake.

Because of the presence of carbonates in these soils, the proposed method of compaction control must be modified to provide that no soils showing a reaction to hcl shall be dried at temperatures other than as specified in ASTM Standard D2049-69.

The above SER input should be replaced by the following:

2.5.4 Stability of Subsurface Materials The upper 60 feet ----- subjected to the postulated earthquake.

Carbonates may be present in the proposed fill materials, and the carbonate fraction will be partly lost during drying of these materials at the elevated temperatures proposed by the anplicant. The proposed drying procedure to be used for compaction control is acceptable for the fill materials at this site because any carbonate loss will result in more conservative densities of these fill materials.
