PLANT NAME: WPPSS Nuclear Project No. 1 LICENSING STAGE: P i

DOCKET NUMBER:u -460 MILESTONE NUMBER: N/A RESPONSIBLE BRANCH: LWR 1; T. Cox, LPM REQUESTED COMPLETION DATE: N/A APPLICANTS RESPONSE DATE NECESSARY FOR NEXT ACTION PLANNED ON PROJECT: N/A REVIEW STATUS: Continuing - Geology and Seismology Branch, Foundation Engineering Section We have reviewed the document entitled, " Report on Variances to the PSAR Soil Density Testing Commaitment," February 26, 1976, by United Engineers & Constructors, Incorporated, for Washington Public Power.

Supply System.

In our memorandum dated February 24, 1976, to you, subject as above, we asked for additional information to complete our review. The final report has provided most of the information needed. With respect to our request for a schedule and frequency for the conduct of variable amplitude tests, the.above report states that amplitude control tests will be performed once every two weeks; this frequency is in-adequate. We recommend that additional control tests be run whenever a new borrow pit is used or a change irr backfill material from the same pit is noted.

~

With the above provision, it is our opinion that the proposed modifi-

- cations.of the testing program and apparatus are acceptable and that backfill and compsetion may continue.

This evaluation was prepared by D. Gillen, FES, Geology and Seismology Branch, DSE.
