Dear Dr. Murley; Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 3 Reporting of Potential Significant Deficiencies in Accordance with 10CFR50.55(e): Failure of Pinion Gear Shear Keys in Limitorque Model SBO (SD-25)
In Reference (1), Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) reported a potential significant deficiency concerning failure of pinion gear shear keys in Limitorque Model SBO motor operated valves as required by 10CFR50.55(e).
References (2) and (3) provided interim reports on our progress toward resolving the deficiency.
The purpose of this letter is to amend our closure letter (Reference (4)) for this potential significant deficiency.
The Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) of Westinghouse subsequently reviewed the shop order records for Millstone Unit No. 3 and determined that none of the EMD manufactured valves supplied to NNECO used the SB-O series Limitorque Actuator, the type discussed in Reference 4. Hence,it has been determined that this is not a significant deficiency for Millstone Unit No. 3.
