DOCKET M0. 50-460 STRUCTUP.AL EliGINEERIliG BRAllCH SECOND REQUEST FOR IMFORMATION Section 3.7.2.13 Questions 3.9 and 3.28 Although t.he Staff concern was expressed in the Section entitled, "l-fethods to Determine Category I Structures Overturning !!oments", it was meant to apply to the analysis of all structures, systems and subsystems for all forces (moments, shears, normal forces etc.) acting internally upon the structures, systems or components.
The Staff position as stated in the original question, Question 3.9, was as follows:
"Hence it is required that the effects of earthquakes on' structures, components, or elements be computed by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the particular effects or responses at a particular point caused by each of the three components of motion (two horizontal motions at right angles to one another, and one vertical motion)."
Noting that this statement was applied to include all structures, systems and components it is advisable to include the statements related to this analysis procedure in each of Sections 3.7.2.1, Seismic Systen Analysis and Section 3.7.3.1, Seismic Subsystem Analysis.
In this manner the procedure can be specified in a general way to apply to the method of combining the three responses simultaneously for all Category I structures, systems and components.
It is acceptable to the Staff that the elements being combined as the square root of the sum of the squares be stresses.
Revise the SAR document to reflect these comments.
Section 3.8.1.4 Question 3.34 In response to this question, you indicated that the problem is under study. An approximate date of completicn of the study should be provided.
