FEB 0 31974 Harold R. Denton, Assiatant Director for Site Safety, L Thru: Brian Grimes, Chief, Accident Analysis Branch, L AAB TRIP REPORT - WPPSS NO.1 SITE A visit was made on January 30, 1974 to the site of the Washington Public Power Supply System's (WPPSS) Washington Nuclear Plant No.1 (WNP-1), as well as to the site of its possible relocation. Staff questions on the PSAR had been discussed in a previous meeting with the applicant in Dethesda, Md. on December 18-19, 1973.

My primary objectives in touring the sites were to obtain a general view of the site areas, as well as to observe pertinent river and highway traffic. I toured the site by auto and on foot during the morning and most of the af ternoon, accompanied by the applicants representative, R. Chitwood. I approached within a mile of the Cable Mountain explosives storage area, but did not enter the area itself. The nearest explosives storage facility was observed to be about 5 niles from the site of WP-1 and even further to the possible relocation near Hanford 2.

Ua then drove to the Vernita toll bridge where State Route 240 crosses the Columbia River about 9 miles upstream of the WP-1 site. I observed traffic on the river (none), on the l

highway (light), and at the rest stop by the bridge (none).

We next drove to the site of the possible relocation of WP-1.

This location is about 2500 feet from the containment of Hanford 2, now under construction, and about 3 1/2 miles from the Columbia River. The nearest residents live just acrous the river.

My tour ended at about 4:30 PM at a barge landing on the river about 2 to 3 miles north of the city of Richland. I was informed that heavy equipment for Hanford 2 had been carried by barge up the Columbia River, and had been trucked to the site from this point. It is anticipated that heavy equipennt for WNP-1, at the original or relocated site, would be handled the same way.
