Letter from Mr. 3. A. Tiernan to Mr. A. C. Thadani, dated April 18,1986, same subject Gentlemen:

The purpose of this letter is to confirm with you our understanding of the results and conclusions reached in Reference (b) that was convened to provide the needed information requested in Reference (a).

We understand that sufficient information has been provided to aid you in completing your review, and that our post-trip review data and information capabilities are adequate in the areas previously felt to be unsatisfactory.

Specifically, we believe that the information provided in Reference (b) and repeated below addresses the intent of the Reference (a) review criteria.

Mr. David H. Jaffe May 20,1986 Page 2 The Summary in Enclosure 2 of Reference (a) stated that we were unsatisfactory in the following four areas:

1-Parameters recorded; 2-Time history recorders performance characteristics, 3-Data output format; and 4-Data retention capability.

We explained in Reference (b) that the generic list of " desirable PWR parameters" did not fully apply to Calvert Cliffs because of specifics in our plant design. Additionally, we gave you further information about our plant computer, Sequence of Events (SOE) recorder, Technical Support Center (TSC) computer, and other monitors that record data for post-trip review. We believe you were satisfied with the additional information.

We also informed you that the information in our original submittal for Generic Letter 83-28, item 1.2 has been discovered to be now incorrect.

We updated this information with Reference (c).

Your contractor for technical review apparently misinterpreted our time-history recorder performance characteristics reported in the original response. In addition, we failed to supply in the same submittal the TSC sample rates, although the other perfor-mance characteristics were provided. We feel that we meet the criteria of Reference (a) and as a result of our conversation and information provided in Reference (b), we believe you are satisfied with the various computer performance characteristics.

The data output format and retention capability for Calvert Cliffs was not originally supplied because there was no request for the information in the generic letter.

However, in Reference (b) we informed you that our post-trip review data is retained for the life of the plant, and that we maintain an instruction at Calvert Cliffs which explains how to read and use the recorder outputs. This ensures that the data is meaningful.

Should you have further questions regarding this subject, we would be pleased to discuss them with you.

Very truly yours, L. E. Saiyards Principal Engineer -
