o November 23, 1992 Ms. Barbara Cerny Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management U.S. Department of Energy Forrestal Building 1000 Independence Avenue, S.W.
Washington, DC 20585
Dear Ms. Cerny:
The NRC staff is continuing its analysis of the LSS Topical Guidelines and the impact of possibly excluding certain categories of material. This analysis was prompted by comments received from the LSS Advisory Review Panel on the previous draft Regulatory Guide. We need your help to estimate the volume of LSS material that would be excluded from the LSS if certain categories of information were excluded from the Topical Guidelines.
We will use your volume estimates to calculate cost impacts.
Please provide me with a breakdown of the projected volume of LSS material that falls into the categories identified in the attached table.
Also, please identify in the table your estimate of DOE document processing costs that could be avoided, if any, should material on these topics be excluded from the LSS.
I acknowledge that any figures you will provide will only be gross estimates because ! know from previous discussions that data was not collected category by category when the overall estimates were compiled.
Our office continues to assume that the volume estimates in the revised LSS Data Scope Analysis report dated August 31, 1990 are still the best available overall figures, if this is no longer true, please annotate the attached table to reflect the revised estimates.
In order to meet our due date,or a Commission paper on the Topical Guidelines, we would appreciate receiving your estimates by December 21, 1992.
If you have any questions or can not meet this deadline, please let me know as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
(%1nd Signea dy Lloyd J. Donnelly LSS Administrator Attachment
