. Docket No. 50-4B2 Mr. Bart D. Withers President and Chief Executive Officer Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation Post Office Box 411 Burlington, Kansas 66B39
Dear Mr. Withers:
SUBJECT:
WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION - SCHEDULE FOR PERFORMING CONTAINMENT ~
INTEGRATED LEAK RATE TESTING (TAC N0, M82980)
Licensee Event Report 9)-020-01 w s submitted on January 6, 1992, and included a request for NRC review and approval of the testing schedule for Type A containment Integrated Leak Rate Tests (ILRT) in accordance with Technical Specification 4.6.1.2(b) and 10 CFR 50 Appendix J, Section Ill. A.6.(a).
These requirements were made necessary due to Wolf Creek exceeding the allowable leakage value for the "as-found" condition during the ILRT performed during Refueling Outage V.
The majority of the containment leakage was discovered to be from isolation valves associated with the Essential Service Water (ESW) system which were found to have experienced erosion / corrosion of the valve disks.. Following repair of the valves, the leakage rate from the associated penetration was measured to be a small percentage of the allowable value and
.the integrated leak rate was computed to be well below the allowable value.
Since the 'cause of the excessive leakage has been identified and repaired and the leakage from sources other than the affected ESW valves was found to be acceptable, the staff approves the proposed ILRT test schedule of performing the next ILRT during Refueling Outage VII.
