Abstract: The proposed rule would add an explicit requirement to Section 31.5 that general licensees respond within 30 days to requests from the NRC, or other time specified in the request, for information concerning products that they have received for use under a general license. The NRC intends to use this provision primarily to institute a l registration and accounting system for the devices containing certain quantities of spe'cific l radionuclides that present a higher risk (compared to other generally licensed devices) of I

exposure to the public or property if a device were lost. The proposed rule is intended to 4 ensure that general licensees are aware of and understand the requirements for the

l possession of devices containing byproduct material and can account for their devices.

Better awareness on the part of these licensees of their responsibilities would help to ensure that they comply with the requirements for proper handling and disposal of i

generally licensed devices and should help reduce the potential for incidents that could result in unnecessary radiation exposure to the public as well as contamination of f

property.
