SUBJECT:

NRC INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-373/98026(DRS); 50-374/98026(DRS)

Dear Mr. Kingsley:

On November 6,1998, the NRC completed an inspection at the LaSalle Nuclear Generating

Station, Units 1 and 2. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.

The purpose of this inspection was to review the effectiveness of completed corrective actions to

address a number of previously identified violations and inspection followup items. In addition,

an assessment of the actions planned or completed to address a number of events discussed in

licensee event reports was also conducted.

At the end of the inspection, the NRC concluded that the corrective actions to address the

issues reviewed were effective. However, two examples were identified where engineering

judgement was used inappropriately for final disposition of engineering issues.

During this inspection, the NRC reviewed a number of violations which were self-identified.

These violations will not be subject to enforcement action because your efforts meet the criteria

specisied in Section Vll.B.1 of the " General Statement of Policy and Procedures for NRC

Enforcement Actions,"(Enforcement Policy), NUREG-1600.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its

enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
