Dear Co=issioner Gilinsky:
Thank you for your letter of October 17, advising me of the Commission's interest in the possibility of converting university research reactors to the use of low-enriched uranium fuel.
It sounds, on the face of it, like an eminently sensible thing to do.
Unfortunately, it also sounds like it night be an expensive thing to do, and this is a concern.
As you know, Dr. T. F. Parkinson, Director of our own Nuclear Reactor Labor-atory, is a nember of a small study group which vill report shortly to the KRC on the feasibility and cost of making the conversions you are advocating.
We vill be -interested in that report, as will you,'I am sure. We will also be nest eager to learn the extent to which this university.would be assisted by the DOI and the NRC in bearing the fiscal and regulatory. burdens that would acconpany conversion.
I have asked Dr. Parkinson to keep us posted as we go along so that we can anticipate appropriately, but I would be pleased to hear from you as well, if and as the Commission develops signif.icant new positions on the matter that might affect us.
Thank you again for your recent information, and ber.t regards.
Sincerely, M.E.
