Vice-President, Engineering Nuclear Research Corporation 125 Titus Avenue Warrington, PA 18976

Dear Dr. Pandy:

I 1 am writing regarding recent telephone conversations you have had with John Jankovich, Ph.D.,

of my staff, about potential zeroing problems with the Model GP-100C(V6) detector in high radiation fields. Our understanding is that the problem involves a failure due to excessive total integrated dose received by the detector, in order for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to properly evaluate the situation, Dr. Jankovich had requested a list of customers, other than power plants, who use this device, as well as an operating manual for the device. As of this date, we have yet to receive this information.

The NRC is very concerned that users may not be fully aware of potential zeroing problems in certain radiation fields. Therefore, NRC would like to review the operating manual to evaluate the instructions provided to users to ensure that users do have adequate information waming them of this potential problem. Additionally, NRC would like to receive the list of customers, other than those at power plants, in order to make a determination as to the extent of the use of the detector and the likelihood that a large number of customers could experience this problem with their detectors, yet be unaware of it, and to evaluate any health and safety issues.

Therefore, please send me the following: 1) a list of customers using this detector, other than those at power plants, and 2) the operating manual for this detector.

. If you have any questions, please call me at 301-415-7231.

Sincerely, Larry W. Camper, Chief Materials Safety Branch f
