Dear Ms. Rodgers:

Your letter of October 27,1997, has been referred to me for a response. You requested f

that the NRC look into a property located on the site of the Haddam Neck Plant, licensed under our regulations to the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company, for eligibility for-listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

I contacted the_ licensee by telephone on November 14,1997, and was informed that the 8

foundation of a former slave's home, known as the Venture Smith Homesite is located in a

. publicly accessible area of the Ccensee's property. The Homesite was not impacted by the i

construction of the Haddam Neck Plant and the licensee assured me that they will take care during dismantlement of the plant, which starts in 1998, not to disturb the Homesite.

-Connecticut Yankee is considering placing a historic merker at the Homesite. Two local citizens have volunteered to keep the area cleaned up and have been doing so in the past.

We trust that we have supplied you enough information so that you can make a decision on whether or not to include the Homesite in the National Register of Historic Places. For further information I can be reached at (301) 4131442 or by e-mail at MBF@NRC. GOV.
