science and engineering to benefit faculty and students at HBCUs. The NRC signed a cooperative agreement with the Oak Ridge institute for Science and Education to manage the
- m day-to-day operation of the program and negotiate HBCU student / faculty assignments.
E Assignments are individually negotiated based on student and faculty interest and capability; and capability of the institution for on-campus research. Since 1992, NRC has maintained -
successful partnerships wh several HBCUs by offering faculty and student research assignments at national lcratories and by supporting on-campus research when possible.
These research assignments have included digital image processing, design and development for fluid flow heat and mass transfer problems, and operation trouble-shooting and optimization c of the environmental restoration groundwater and vadose zone remediation. Two hundred 4 thousand dollars have been allocated for the HBCU program in FY98. The same amount is pic-i-::d for FY99.
The number of students and faculty participating in the program varies slightly from year to -
