SUBJECT:

SUPPLEf1 ENTAL INPUT TO THE SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT  !

FOR WPPSS flVCLEAR PROJECT N0. 2, GEflERIC ISSUES BRANCH l

I l

Enclosed is the Generic Issues Branch supplemental safety evaluation report input for WPPSS Nuclear Project No. 2. This input clarifies the I status of USI A-46, which deals with operating plants only and should not have been applied to WNP-2 in Appendix C. Therefore, the open item l identified in Appendix C of the SER for USI A-46 is no longer applicable for WNP-2. This input also changes the open item identified for USI A-47 to be a confirmatory item. This change is being made because the Generic Issues Branch is not responsible for the review of the open items.

If you have any questions regarding this input, please contact T. ft. Su at x27477.

.' c Supplement.to Safety Evaluation Report Appendix C A-46 Seismic Qualification of Equipment in Operating Plants i

The scope of Task A-46 is limited to dealing with the seismic qual'ification of equipment in operating plants. Therefore, the issue related to Task A-46 is not applicable for WNP-2. WNP-2 was designed on the basis of current seismic desigr, criteria, and commitments for seismic equipment qualification are in accordance with the latest codes and standards. Accordingly, the open -

iten identified in Appendix C of the SER for USI A-46 should be deleted.

J I A-47 Safety Implications of Control Systems Appendix C of the SER for USI A-47 indicated that the staff has not completed review of WNP-2 with regard to IE Notices 79-22 and 79-27. This status has i not changed. When the staff completes the review, the results of the staff's review will be documented in Sections 7.7.2.2 and 7.5.2 of the safety evaluation report, respectively, for IE Notices 79-22 and 79-27.

Based on the above and the discussions presented in the SER, we have concluded that subject to the satisfactory resolution of the OPEN items regarding Sections 7.7.2.2 and 7.5.2, there is reasonable assurance that WNP-2 can be operated prior to the ultimate resolution of this generic issue l without undue risk to the health and safety of the public.
