Dear Mr. Arthur:
4 r.
This letter is to notify you that NRC Headquarters tifff will be responsible for reviewing DOE's proposed remedial action for the acid leach pond adjacent to the Spook, Wyoming UMTRA site. While DOE has identified this pond as a vicinity property, the NRC staff consider that it's characterization and proposed remediation should be reviewed in tandem with the proposed remedial action for the Spook tailings.
O As you know, the NRC Uranium Recovery Field Office (URF0) generally has lead responsibility for the UMTRA vicinity property reviews.
However, URF0 agrees that we should review the proposed remedial action for this vicinity property, due to it's closa association with the Spook site.
In this regard, please send the documents on the Spook vicinity property to my office for NRC review and coment. As discussed with Debbie Mann of your staff, we need to receive these documents in time to support our review of the final Design and Remedial Action Plan for the Spook site. We are scheduled to receive these Spook documents for review in mid December, 1988.
If you have any questions, please contact Susan Bilhorn of my staff.
Sincerely, W
Paul Lohaus, Chief Operations Branch Division of Low-Level Waste Management and Decommissioning, NMSS E. Hawkins, NRC/URF0 /
