Dear Mr. Turner:

On November 5,1997, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received a request from ,

your contractor, Associated Environmental Services (AES), to review and provide comments on '

the "Remediation Workplan for the Ameristeel incident-related Materials Remediation at .

Clearfield and Wendover, Utah." On February 19,1998, the NRC staff provided our comments  ;

on the proposed work plan to AES. Most of the activities described in the Workplan pertained

. to the management of the material in Utah, an NRC Agreement State, and our comments .l focused on the disposal of the incident related material in Idaho. To date, we have not received I any additional information on your proposed Workplan or revisions to the plan. As such, we assume that Ameristeel is no longer interested in pursuing disposal of the incident-related material.' _Therefore, unless informed otherwise within 30 days of the date of this letter,-NRC' -

staff will consider this matter closed.
