Dear (Liaison Officer):

(See attached list)

ThieRegionIVofficeoftheNuclearRegulatoryCommissionisplanninga meeting of the Governor-appointed State Liaison Officers from the 14 states in the region. Region IV includes Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

The meeting will take place on June 19 and June 20 in the NRC's Arlington, Texas, office at 611 Ryan Plaza Drive (we are in the Parkway Central Building between Lamar Boulevard and Ryan Plaza Drive). A map showing the location of the office is included in the packet of information accompanying this letter.

We plan to begin the meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, and end it at noon on Friday, June 20.

We are developing the agenda for this meeting. However, we anticipate including discussions of the following topics: the status of each of the low-level waste compacts in which Region IV states are involved; NRC and state responsibilities according to the amended Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act; high-level waste activities in Region IV states; the status of the uranium milling industry from both the state and federal perspective; New Mexico's decision to return the regulation of uranium milling to the federal government; and response to incidents involving a rupture of a uranium hexafluoride cylinder and a train-truck accident involving uranium yellowcake.

Gary Sanborn will be in touch with you regarding your participation in discussing these topics. Please contact Mr. Sanborn with your ideas for other topics that would be of interest to the state representatives attending this meeting. His telephone number is (817)860-8267.

NRC's Office of State Programs will pay the travel expenses for either the State Liaison Officer or a designated alternate from each state. Please complete the enclosed yellow form and return it by mail or telephone the information to Mr. Sanborn by Wednesday, May 20. Mr. Sanborn will provide you with additional information on travel arrangements.
