Dear Mr. Davis:

This refers to your letter dated October 3,1978, concerning the radiation l

protection inspection,of the Ford Nuclear Reactor on September 6-8,1978 and the item of noncompliance which resulted from the inspection.

Item of Noncompliance

" Contrary to Technical Specifications 6.5. A.3 and 4.7. A, there was no documentation to confirm that the gamma spectrometry equipment used to measure liquid waste tank contents had been calibrated since March,1977."

1.

Corrective Action Taken and the Results Achieved.

The gamma spectrometry equipment was calibrated on October 24, 1978 using an NBS mixed isotope standard and a calibration record was obtained.

2.

Corrective Action to be Taken to Avoid Further Noncompliance.

A health physics procedure requiring quarterly calibration of the gamma spectrometry equipment is being written. The calibration will be based on comparison to a NBS mixed isotope standard.

3 The Date When Full Compliance Will be Achieved.

Full compliance has been achieved. The calibration procedure will be completed and implemented by Deccmber 1,1978.

Sincerely,

/n M>
