Thickness Gauge DESCRIPTION:
2 The Intergrated Industrial Systems, Inc. (I S) Model RSS-06 is used for the measurement:of the thickness of various materials, customarily in the-sheet metal industry.
The device consist of a C-Frame with a measuring gap that varies according to the application.
The measuring gap has a' maximum dimension of 3.94" (10 cm).
The C-Frame has the following variable dimensions:
Maximum Minimum (inches)
(cm)
(inches)
(cm)
Length 101.'25 257.18 18 45.72 Height 16.5 41.91 15 38.1 The C-Frame is 9" (22.86 cm) wide.
It is a welded assembly constructed of 0.375" (9.53 mm) low carbor. steel.
The radioactive source is mounted in the base of the device and is fixed in place by a source holder which is mounted within a steel source housing.
The sealed source contains americium-241 with a maximum activity of 1 curie.
The americium-241 source contains radioactive material incorporated in a ceramic enamel which is sealed in a welded stainless steel capsule.
The source _
is distributed by Amersham Corporation.and is registered with the State.of Illinois as the Model AMC.19.
The source housing is approximately 6" x 6" x 4" (15.24 cm x 15.24 cm x 10.16 cm) and constructed of carbon steel.
The top of the housing has 1.7" (4.23 cm) diameter window which is covered with_0.002" (0.051 mm) thick-stainless steel and includes a bronze co111 mating assembly.
The source is housed in a stainless steel holder-which is equipped with a bronze shutter, 0.125" (3.18--mm) thick.
.The-shutter is controlled by a-rotary solenoid which'is equipped with a spring to hold the shutter in the closed position.
When power is., supplied to the solenoid, the shutter rotates.to the open position.

- LABELING:
The device contains three labels.
The first has a yellow background, black letters, with a magenta trefoil symbol, as
' defined-in Section.20.1901, 10 CFR Part 20.
The label also includes the isotope,. activity, model-number, serial number, date e
2 of assay-of the source,: and the name and complete address of I 3, The-second label also has a yellow background, black letters, with1a magenta trefoil symbol.
It includes a-warning to not remain within 3 feet of the-device, indicates that_the_ green-
. light means the. source.is "OFF",
and-warns not'to place hands within the measuring gap.
The third label.has a black background with white letters.
It g
-contains wording which meetsithe requirements _of
.10 CPR 32. 51 (a)'(3) (iii).. A copy',of the label is shown in

DIAGRAM:
See attachments i and 2.
CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The Model RSS-06 thickness gauge is designed to measure the thickness of thin sheets of various types of metals.
The device will typically be used on rolling mills in a factory environment by metal proitucers.
The device is not likely to be subjected to extremes of environmental or operating conditions.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
I'S did not-supply prototype test results regarding mechanical operation (e.g.,
no specific data on retention of the source when the device is subjected to mechanical stimuli).
In lieu of such 2
submission, I S relied on the ANSI-N542 classification of the source and the past use of an almost identical device which they currently distribute in the U.S.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
The manufacturer reports that the dose rates for.the Model RSS-06 transmission gauge _containing a 1.0 curie, Am-241 sealed source will not exceed the following:
Maximum Radiation Level Distance-Shutter Open Shutter Closed (inches)
(cm)

The dose rates were taken with.no material present in the 2
measuring gap.
1 S indicates this represents t he highest radiation levels of any of the possible configurations.
OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
I S maintains a quality assurance and control program which has 2
been deemed acceptable for licensing purposes by NRC.
A copy of the program is on file with the Source Containment and Devices Branch.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
The device may be-distributed to specific or general licensees of NRC or an Agreement State.
Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal:
To be determined by the licensing authority or as required by 10 CFR 31.5, or Agreement State equivalent.
The device shall be. leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
General licensees using the devices are authorized to perform certain maintenance on the device, such as changing the shutter indicator lights and removal and maintenance of the gauge receiver head.
This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

Thickness Gauge SAFETY ANALYSIS J_UBMARYi I S has submitted suf ficient information to provide reasonable assurance that:
The device can be safely operated by persons not having
~
training in radiological protection.
Under ordinary conditions of handling, storage, and use of the; device, the byproduct material contained in the device will not be released or inadvertently removed from the source housing, and it is unlikely tha+ any person will receive in any period of one year a dose in excess of 10 percent of the limits specified in Section 20.1201(a),
Under accident conditions associated with handling, storage, and use of the source housing, it is unlikely that any person would receive an external radiation dose or dose commitment in excess of the dose to the appropriate organ as specified in the following chart:
PART OF BODY POSE Whole body; head and trunk; active blood-forming organs; gonads; or lens of eye 15 rem (0.15 Sv)
Hands and forearms; feet and ankles; localized areas of skin averaged over areas no larger 2
2 than 1 cm (0.15 in )
200 rem (2.0 Sv)
Other organs 50 rem (0.50 Sv)
Based on review of the Model RSS-06, and the information and test data cited below, we continue to conclude that the device is z
acceptable for licensing purposes.
