Dear Mr. Bruels:

Thank you for your letter of January 15,1998, in which you requested information about the draft proposed rule that would revise the dose limit for members of the public exposed to hospitalized radiation patients.

At this time, the NRC is in the process of revising 10 CFR Part 35 in its entirety and anticipates publishing revised 10 CFR Part 35 for a 75-day public comment period during the summer of 1998. The proposed rule that addresses changes to 10 CFR Parts 20 and 35, for members of the public exposed to hospitalized radiation patients, has been subsumed under the major, overall 10 CFR Part 35 revision effort. Please note that in addition to written comments, the Commission is planning to hold two pubic workshops during the 75-day comment period to discuss the proposed revision. Information about these workshops will be announced in the Federal Register in the near future.

If you have any questions on the proposed revision of 10 CFR Part 35, please call Ms. Cathy Haney, Chairperson of the Part 35 Working Group, at 301-415-6825.

S;ncerely,

/s/
