Dear Mr'doninger:
I am writing to confirm my invitation (as discussed with Mr. Tom King of my staff) and to thank you for accepting to participate in a panel on risk-informed regulation at the upcoming PSAM-4 l
conference to be held in New York City September 13-18,1998 (a brochure giving some generalinformation on the conference is enclosed.) The panel session is scheduled for the moming of Wednesday, September 16,1998, and should last approximately two hours. In addition to my role as panel chairman, other panel members will include:
Dr. George Apostolakis, Department of Nuclear Engineering Massachusetts Institute of Technology Mr. Ralph Beedle, Senior Vice President Regulatory Initiatives, Nuclear Energy Institute Senior Regulator from outsida the U.S.
The topic for discussion is risk informed regulation. Each panel member will be given an opportunity to make 5-10 minutes of opening remarks, which w!ll then be followed by a roundtable discussion and responses to questions from the audience. Of particular interest would be your views on:
what is your concept of risk-informed regulation?
what applications do you see for improving safety, reducing unnecessary burdens or better utilizing resources by the application of risk information?
what has been your experience in the application of risk information in regulation:
what has gone well?
what needs to be improved?
