[l(p October 10, 1986 Mr. Thomas Elsasser U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406

Dear Mr. Elsasser:

This letter is in response to a " Reportable Occurrence" telephoned to you on September 30, 1986.

A low battery voltage in the thermocouple circuit caused a malfunction of the fuel temperature readout which was observed quickly as part of the normal operating procedure instrument check. Reoccurrence of this type of malfunction has been minimized by implementing a battery replacement procedure using a six month replacement interval. This replacement scheme is now an item in the standard survellance procedures.

Sincerely, MLR:ga h & $c f-Marvin L. Roush i t-Professor / Chairman Chemical & Nuclear Engineering 8610270395 861010 PDR ADOCK 05000166 g PDR
