Dear Mr. Stello:

Peach Bottom Units 2 and 3 Performance Referring to your letter of June 12, we have reviewed in depth the operation and management of our Peach Bottom Plant. While we believe improvements should and will be made to the operations at the plant, and that the overall performance of the staff has been adequate to assure that the plant has been operating without undue risk to the health and safety of the public and our employees, we will not be satisfied until our improve-ments continue to the point where we achieve outstanding performance.

As indicated by the SALP transmittal letter of June 6,1986 (T. E. Nurley to S. L. Daltroff), NRC Region I will conduct an in-depth team inspection at Peach Bottom. The SALP review meeting between Philadelphia Electric manage-ment and Region I senior staff is scheduled for July 11, 1986. Based on the NRC team inspection results being available and the SALP review meeting schedule, I suggest that late July or early August would be an appropriate time for the meeting you requested with me and our senior staff. Assuming your concurrence, we will work with Region I to find a suitable date and time.

Please be assured that we are instituting programs to respond to the concerns expressed by the NRC, and that we will be prepared to discuss these efforts and immediate results, in detail, at the meeting you requested.
