The Commission was briefed by representatives of Boston Edison Company and the NRC staff on the status of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant.

Boston Edison Company presentations were made by the following:

Stephen J. Sweeney Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors Ralph G. Bird Senior Vice President for Nuclear Kenneth L. Highfill Station Director Roy A. Anderson Plant Manager Ronald B. Varley, Manager Emergency Preparedness l Chairman Zech cautioned the licensee to continue its close monitoring of reactor operator's overtime; encouraged continued emphasis on degreed operator program initiatives; emphasized the importance of leadership involvement; and cautioned the licensee that the transition from shutdown activities to operational performance requires changing attitudes and close attention by management and plant personnel.

i Commissioner Carr emphasi;ed to the licensee the importance and challenge of retaining its recently established msnagement and operational expertise.

The Commission directed the staff to closely monitor the licensee's performance; to keep the Commission informed of progress toward restart; and to address, at the next Commission briefing on Pilgrim, the licensee's implementation of its maintenance work control program. The staff was also directed to take whatever time is needed to carefully review and evaluate the licensee's readiness to restart.
