Dear Congressman Forbes:
1 I am responding to a facsimile of October 30,1998, from Mr. Fred Dombo of your staff to Mr. Michael Callahan of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Office of

Congressional Affairs (OCA) staff. In that facsimile, you requested assistance in answering two questions from Mr. Scott M. Cullen of Standing for Truth About Radiation (STAR) concerning an NRC safety assessment on the High Flux Beam Reactor at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The NRC staff plans to send the safety assessment that Mr. Cullen asked about to the Appropriations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Before sending this assessment, the NRC must consider factual comments from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in accordance with the NRC/ DOE agreed-upon scope of work. The current schedule is for DOE to provide comments by January 1,1999, and for NRC to send the report to the Appropriations Committee by February 1,1999.
When the assessment is issued, the NRC staff will send Mr. Cullen's group a copy. OCA will also provide a copy to you.
