Dear Dr. Hartline:
By fax dated July 15 -'1997, you provided additional questions from the PCAST Energy R & D Panel for which you requested responses by July. 25,1997. We are
. currently in the process of researching and preparing responses to your request., However,_due to competing agency priorities we will not be able'to complete our response until August 15, 1997.
In order to support. responses to-some of your questions, I am providing a copy of NRC's Information Digest.
It-will provide you with license expiration dates for commercial power reactors (Question 4) and the number and_ types of operating licensed research reactors (Question 3).
In addition, in response to Question 7, NRC.as completed the Design Certification Rulemakings for the General Electric Advanced Boiling Water Reactor and the Combustion Engineering System 80+ Designs. Therefore, the'only new reactor design under active NRC review is the Westinghouse AP600.
Assuming all technical and policy. issues are resolved, a Final Safety Evalua-tion Report on this design is expected to be completed in 1998. Design Certification Rulemaking is expected to_ occur in the FY 1998 through FY 2000 time frame.
