Siemens Power Corporation (NRC Docket 70-1257) Response to NRC Generic Letter 98-03 Ref.: 1. Letter, LJ Maas to USNRC, same subject, dated September 18,1998.

Siemens Power Corporation (SPC) continues to pursue its year 2000 (Y2K) readiness program to assure that its computer systems will not prevent or degrade the safety function of a structure, system or component or degrade, impair or prevent the operation of the production facility. The program is set forth in document EMF-2097, "SPC Year 2000 Readiness" and is administered by a " Year 2000 Project Team" under the leadership of the Manager, Corporate Information Services.

' As of this date SPC is not completely Y2K ready. The current status of the program, described in Reference 1, is as follows:

The initial assessment of all inventoried assets was completed in February 1999.

The SPC 'Y2K readiness program is approximately 90% complete.

Remediation of the few remaining assets requiring modification is expected by October 1, 1999.

SPC commits to submit, by October 15,1999, a written response updating the status and 1

schedule of its Y2K readiness program described in Reference 1.

Below is a report on the status of specific systems of inte, test with regard to the Y2K readiness effort.

The project is approximately 90% complete with an expected completion date of i

October 1,1999. Most of the software has been written and tested. The remaining j

software will be completed by July 31,1999. Final testing, training and implementation j

will occur during August and September.' There have been no unexpected problems.

The contingency plan remains the same as reported in Reference 2; i.e. manual procedures will be' developed to record movements of material as required by our Fundamental Nuclear Material Control Plan.

e SPC will be conducting a test of the SAP R/3 system in August 1999. No problems are anticipated since the SAP version in use is certified Y2K compliant, Core monitoring software.

e All core monitoring software has been updated and tested and is Y2K ready.

1 Engineering software (neutronic, safety and design).

e Engineering software has been checked and tested as appropriate and is Y2K ready.

' Process control systems'.

Software upgrades have been installed and tested as appropriate and are Y2K ready except for one system. That system is the primary process control system for the dry conversion process. The secondary (safety) control system is Y2K ready. An upgraded

- Y2K ready primary control system will be installed and tested in July 1999.
