SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-498/98-20; 50-499/98-20 AND NOTICE OF
VIOLATION
Dear Mr. Cottle:
From November 2-5,1998, a radiation protection inspection was conducted at your South
Texas Project Electric Generating Station, Units 1 and 2 reactor facilities. The enclosed report
presents the scope and results of that inspection.
One violation of regulatory requirements was identified during the inspection. The violation
involved the failure to perform a survey which resulted in a radiation area not being
conspicuously posted. The NRC has concluded that information regarding the reason for the
violation, the corrective actions taken and planned to correct the violation and prevent
recurrence is already adequately addressed in this inspection report. Therefore, you are not

required to respond to this letter unless the description therein does not accurately reflect your

- corrective actions or your position. In that case, or if you choose to provide additional
}
information, you snould follow the instructions specified in the enclosed Notice.
. In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter, its
enclosure (Q, ed ynor response will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
