ISSUANCE OF DRAFT SAFETY EVALUATION OF T PICAL REPORT NEDC-32721P," APPLICATION METHODOLOGY FOR THE GENERAL ELECTRIC STACKED DISK ECCS SUCTION STRAINER" Dear Mr. Green

/
By letters dated April 3,1997, and November 21,1997,faeneral Electric Company (GE) submitted Topical Report NEDC-32721P, "ApplicatioryMethadology for the General Electric Stacked Disk ECCS Suction Strainer," to the Nucleaf Regu Gory Commission for review. On February 3,1999, the staff issued Part i of its safefy evaluation which provided the staff's evaluation of the methodology used to determine strainer performance. Part 11 of the staff's review addressed the methodology to determ <fe the structural loadings due to hydrodynamic forces during an accident. The staff has com)pleted its evaluation of the structuralloa has prepared a draft safety evaluation which is attached.
The evaluation is still in draft form a as received limited management review. However, at this stage of review, the staff has concluded that a technical meeting would be beneficial between GE, licensees who havy' installed the GE strainer, and the staff. To this end, the staff will use the draft SER as the bgsis of presenting the current thinking of the staff. It is hoped that by using the information in such a manner it will hasten the path to resolution.
