SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT IMPACT TESTING OF ROCKBESTOS AND ANACONDA CABLFR In a continuation of cable damage assessment, a lenJth of two new cables was provided to Singleton Materials Engineering Laboratory (SME) for evaluation.

The identifications of these two cables are given below:

Cable, 1/C-14 Awg, 600V Rockbestos Cable Type - SROAJ - WB Reel No. 14310, Mfg. Reel No. 71918A MK WPA, Contract 839046 Cable, Cu, 14 AWG S/C 60CV Anaconda Cable VIE-1898 2-1 100' Ref 825997 Small voids for: on the inside surface of rubber insulation when electrical cables are subjected to impact forces.

In order to determine the impact energy capable of creating a void in the rubber insulations of

(

these cables, a small laboratory drop weight impact tester was employed (see figure 1). The total tass of the drop weight was 11.8 lbs and, when dropped from various heights, could provide a variable known value of impact energy.

The impact energy at which no voids occured in test sa:ples when dropped on a 2-in. section of cable was determined to be 6.4 f t-lb for the Anaconda cable and 8.9 f t-lb for Rockbestos cable.

Table 1 gives observations obtained on the flat impacts perforced as shown in figure 1 as applied through the 2-in. dia drop weight for the Rockbestos cable.

Table 1 lists similar impacts for the Anaconda cable.

Samples 1 and 2 given in both tables are control samples with no impact (as-received) and shok no signs of voids.
