,o CHAIRMAN December 22, 1987 Dr. Martin J. Steindler, Director Chemical Technology Division Argonne National Laboratory 9700 Cass Avenue Argonne. Illinois 60439
Dear Dr. Steindler:
Thank you for your letter of November 24, 1987 on the need to maintain continuity of competence, institutional memory anJ versatility on the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS). My fellow Commissioners and I appreciate the valuable
' advice and recommendations that we receive from the ACRS and, as such, we view the future role and constituency of the Committee as a very important matter.
The Com'nission is sensitive to the fact that there will be several additional vacancies on the Committee within the coming year. However, as you know, the Commission has been addressing the matter of an advisory committee on waste management, which could have an impact on the constituency of the ACRS. With the decision of establishing a separate waste management advisory committee having been made recently, the l
Commission will now be addressing the issues of maintaining a l
balance in the area of reactor expertise and finding the necessary expertise in the area of waste management. The l
Commission will be solicitinq recommendations from the ACRS for new members to both advisory committees.
Your recommendations on extending the terms of some of the t
I current Committee members will be discussed in an upcoming management meeting. I very much appreciate your letter bringing these concerns to my attention along with your recommendations for resolving this matter.
Sincerely.
Lando W. Z h, Jr.
