Dear Mr. Cruse:
The NRC staff, with technical assistance from its contractor, the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), has reviewed and evaluated the information provided by Baltimore Gas ar.d Electric, in its letter dated June 8,1998, regarding its requests for relief from certain American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code requirements for Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2. The staff found that the licensee's proposed altematives (contained in its Requests for Relief Nos. E1, E2, and L1) are acceptable as they provide an acceptable level of quality and safety, and therefore, they should be authorized pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i).
