Request for Public Comment on Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, NUREG-1317, "Regulatory Options for Nuclear Plant License Renewal," Federal Register of Monday, Auoust 29, 1988

Dear Mr. Chilk:

The Long Island Lighting company (LILCO) , owner of the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station, has commended before on the subject of nucicar plant license renewal in response to the rsquest for public comment on the NRC's statement of policy appearing in the Federal Register of Thursday, November 6, 1986. A copy of the January 30, 1987 letter providing those comments is attached.

LILCO would like to reiterate that it conciders this issue to be of near-term interest and importance to the entire nuclear utility industry and that the commission should continue

_ to proceed expeditiously in defining regulatory policy reg rding plant life extension. In addition, LILCO recently reviewed NUMARC's comments on the "Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking" along with the comments and the position prepared by the NUMARC NUPLEX working group which assumed coordination of the programs of the Nuclear Utility Steering Committee on Plant Life Extension (NUPLEX). LILCO is in general agreement with and endorses the positions presented by the NUMARC NUPLEX working group.

LILCO appreciates the opportunity to provide comments on this important matter of nuclear plant license extensions.

V ry truly yours, m
