SUBJECT:
REVIEW 0F DRAFT RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM PLAN FOR LOW-LEVEL WASTE RESEARCH As requested, we have completed a review of the subject document.
In general, we find that it describes an acceptable approach to fulfilling research needs of LLWM described in our recently issued "NMSS Statement of LLWM Research Needs" (Thompson to Beckjord, 6/8/88). Our statement of need identifies regulatory issues that we believe require investigative and confirmatory research to provide technical support for licensing assessments and safety reviews in the LLWM program. Ongoing research projects covered in your Long Range Research Program already promise to fulfill some of the LLWM needs. Comments on your Program Plan and discussion of other research needs are already a topic of weekly coordination meetings. We intend to work closely with your staff to develop future research projects and address the needs identified in our statement which are not included in the current version of the Program Plan as you move to finalize the document.
