l ATTACHMENT (1) l RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION; i
INTEGRATED PLANr ASSESSMENT REPORT FOR THE SALTWATER SYSTEM NRC Ouestion No. 5.16.4 If an unacceptable degree ofinternal pitting were discovered while examining a saltwater system group 1 component, describe how Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) would resolve that condition, in accordance with established procedures, through final disposition. Include a discussion of how augmented inspection might be developed.
l BGE Response i
As described on page 5.16-13 of the License Renewal Application (LRA), a new plant program to discover degradation will be developed to inspect representative Group I components. The program is an Age-Related Degradation Inspection Program.. If discovery of unacceptable degradation occurs, the site Corrective Actions Program will be invoked. Detailed information concerning the site Corrective Actions Program is readily available onsite for review.
NRC Ouestion No. 5.16.5 Provide a summary of the buried piping inspection program as applied to the saltwater system (groups 1 and 2). In the discussion include details of:
a) inspection scope basis; b) inspection methods used; c) frequency ofinspections and the rationale.
BGE Response Periodic inspection of the Saltwater piping's corrosion-resistant interior linings, as described on page 5.16-7, provides an effective means to discover and manage aging effects. For this reason, the buried piping inspection program does not apply to the Saltwater System. All programs credited for managing aging of Saltwater System components are identified in Table 5.16-5 of the LRA on page 5.16-34.
NRC O===elam No. 5.16.6 Page 5.16-16 of the application indicates that the buried saltwater system piping is protected from corrosion, in part, by an impressed current cathodic protection program. However, the application does not indicate that the cathodic protection program will be relied on to manage aging of buried piping for license renewal.
Clarify whether BGE relies on cathodic protection for buried piping. If cathodic protection is relied l
upon for aging management, provide a summary of the program, describe the related inspection and
. verification activities, and describe corrective measures, if any, resulting from operating experience.
BGE Response The programs credited to manage aging effects of the buried piping, device type -LC in Group 2, are described on pages 5.16-17 and 5.16-18 of the LRA. A summary of these programs is contained in L
_ Table 5.16-5. The cathodic protection system is not a credited aging management program.
The statements on page 5.16-16 about the impressed current cathodic protection system do not mean
[
the buried saltwater piping is directly connected to the cathodic protection system.
