Gentlemen:

On_ September 30,1987, we notified you via our final report logged TXX-6771 of a deficiency involving the use of improper welding processes in the manufacturing of cable tray tee fittings. Our latest supplemental report was logged TXX-88271, dated March 1,1988. The purpose of this report is to update the status of the corrective actions for Unit 1.

The modification work for those tee fittings identified as being deficient is ongoing with approximately 95% completion for Unit 1. The Unit I scheduled completion date of June 14, 1988, as stated in TXX-88271 will not be achieved.

Completion of this activity for Unit 1 and common area will be commensurate with the schedule established in the Post Construction Hardware Validation Program (PCHVP), currently July 27, 1988. Additionally, five of the two huridred sixteen (216) tee fittings identified are inaccessible for modification. An engineering evaluation will be performed to evaluate their condition. This evaluation will also be completed by July 27, 1988. If any modifications are required as a result of this evaluation, we will notify you of the implementation schedule by August 30, 1988.

The schedule for completion of Unit 2 activities associated with this issue '

remains as previously stated in TXX-88271 (prior to Unit 2 fuel load).

l Very truly yours, l f//W W. G. Counsil
